The Formula, and a Worked Example
Break-even students = monthly fixed costs ÷ average monthly revenue per member, rounded up.
Fixed costs are the bills that arrive whether or not anyone shows up to train: rent, insurance, utilities, software and payment processing, and coach pay. Revenue per member is your total monthly billing divided by your active paying members. You round up because you cannot enrol part of a student.
A worked example at national-average pricing: rent $4,500, insurance $350, utilities $400, software and processing about $400, and $1,500 of part-time coach pay. That is $7,150 of monthly fixed costs. At $146 a member — the US average from Gold BJJ's State of Jiu Jitsu survey — break-even is 49 students. At $180 a member in a big metro, it is 40. Everything above that line pays you.
Some of those lines hold still and some do not. Rent and insurance are contracts; utilities drift with the seasons; coach pay grows with your schedule. Software and processing is the line owners most often underestimate, because it is a subscription plus a percentage of everything you bill, so it climbs every time you add a member. Kmura's $150 a month flat per location at least keeps the subscription half of that line still as you grow.
Both numbers above come from our own guides:
- How to open a BJJ gym — where this worked example comes from, plus what startup actually costs and how long the runway to break-even usually is.
- BJJ gym profitability metrics — revenue per member, software and processing as a share of revenue, and the rest of the numbers worth tracking monthly.
